Hsiang-Wen Hsiao, a student at National Chung Cheng University (CCU), has made history by securing Taiwan’s first medal in the 2024 Paris Paralympics! Competing in the K44 men’s 58kg taekwondo event, Hsiao delivered an outstanding performance, ultimately defeating Spanish athlete Joel Martin Villalobos 16-8 to win the bronze medal. This achievement marks Taiwan's first-ever medal in the history of Paralympic taekwondo.

Hsiang-Wen Hsiao graduated from the Department of Athletic Sports at CCU this June. He began practicing taekwondo in the fifth grade of elementary school and has steadily risen in the sport through unwavering determination and relentless effort. Despite facing a major challenge when a car accident at the age of 21 caused a brachial plexus injury to his right arm, Hsiao refused to give up. With the support of his family, girlfriend, and Coach CCU Associate Professor Yen-Ni Wu, he made a remarkable comeback to the competitive arena.

This success at the Paris Paralympics symbolizes Hsiang-Wen Hsiao’s indomitable spirit and represents a historic breakthrough for Taiwan. His bronze medal is not only a testament to his personal perseverance but also brings immense pride to National Chung Cheng University and Taiwan. Hsiao's remarkable achievement serves as an inspiration to Taiwanese society and showcases the resilience and potential of Taiwanese athletes on the international stage.
