The Blessing Banquet Beneath the Flame Trees — A Farewell to Youth

publish date : 2025-05-03

As the season of blooming flame trees returns, it marks the arrival of graduation once again. This year, the Graduation Committee has organized a unique cultural event titled "A Farewell Feast in Chiayi" for the Class of 2024 (Class 113), blending local traditions with the bittersweet atmosphere of graduation. The aim is to create unforgettable memories for the graduates, sending them off with heartfelt blessings through a traditional Taiwanese banquet.

Ban-doh, or traditional Taiwanese outdoor banquets, are one of Taiwan’s most iconic cultural practices. More than just a culinary feast, they are a vibrant social gathering that fosters deep emotional connections. For this event, the Graduation Committee specially invited a renowned Chiayi-based restaurant to the venue to prepare a luxurious spread for the graduates. Dishes such as Blissful Union, Golden Cordyceps Chicken Soup, and Island Chicken Oil Rice showcased the richness of local flavors. While students feasted, international students also got a taste—both literal and cultural—of Taiwan’s culinary traditions.

The event drew enthusiastic participation from many international students. For many of them, it was their first time experiencing a ban-doh—a cultural fusion of food, music, and community. Beyond being a farewell celebration, the feast became a journey of cultural discovery, allowing them to deeply feel the warmth and hospitality of Taiwan before they leave. Their heartfelt engagement reflected a sincere appreciation and respect for the local culture, making the night both lively and moving.

To create the most authentic ban-doh atmosphere, the venue was decked out with a traditional Taiwanese-style stage truck featuring LED lights and vibrant decor. Student clubs like the Korean Culture Club and the Hip-Hop Club performed energetic shows, ranging from traditional music and dance to balloon art performances. These performances highlighted students’ creativity and enthusiasm. To ensure inclusivity, bilingual (Chinese-English) introductions were provided, allowing international attendees to fully grasp the cultural background and meaning behind each performance.

Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Lu Long-Chuan, gave a heartfelt message to the graduating class embarking on their next journey:
“Graduation is not the end—it’s the beginning of a new chapter. I hope each of you continues to chase your dreams with courage, stay true to yourselves, and carry the knowledge and experiences from your time here as your guiding light. Wherever life takes you, may you shine and inspire others. Remember the laughter, friendship, and support from this chapter—these are the most valuable nutrients in your journey of life.”

Through “A Farewell Feast in Chiayi,” the Graduation Committee hopes to create a one-of-a-kind collective memory for the Class of 2024. In this emotional moment of transition, the event offered a space for reunion, gratitude, celebration, and goodbyes. Though farewells come with a touch of sorrow, they also carry the promise of new beginnings. May every graduate carry with them the blessings of their alma mater and mentors, and step boldly into a brilliant future—shining brightly along their journey through life.
