National Chung Cheng University Announces 2023 Academic Awards, Recognizing 12 Faculty Members

To continuously enhance academic research capacity and motivate
both teachers and students to improve their ability in their respective
research fields, the National Chung Cheng University (CCU) held the
2023 Academic Research Awards Banquet on April 25, 2024. Besides
honoring outstanding awardees, the award ceremony recognized the
talents and efforts of the university’s scholars. Twelve award-winning
professors gathered to give speeches, and Shaw-Jenq Tsai, the
President of CCU, personally presented the awards. This event
reviewed recent academic and research achievements on campus,
fostering a shared enthusiasm for knowledge exploration and
innovation, and continuously looking forward to the future.
The Office of Research and Development of CCU reported that Prof.
Green, Andrew (Andy) David, the first recipient of the Ministry of
Education’s Yushan Fellow Program for short-term exchange at
CCU, was appointed as a chair professor. Andy is ranked among the
top 2% most cited education experts in the world according to a
Stanford University study and is also the director of the Centre for
Learning and Life Chances in Knowledge Economies and Societies.
His primary mission during his short-term exchange is to expand the
international perspective of higher education, promote cultural
exchange, and deepen collaboration.
Additionally, Shaw-Jenq Tsai, a professor from the Department of
Biomedical Sciences (BMS), was named a chair professor. Professor
Tsai has received numerous accolades, including the Ministry of
Education’s Academic Award, recognition as one of the top 2% of
scientists nationwide, the Fuller W. Bazer SSR International Scientist
Award from the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR), the
Distinguished Scientist Award from the Society for Experimental
Biology and Medicine (SEBM), and the Outstanding Research Award
from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). He has
served as an editor for several international journals, a senior
editorial board member, and the director of the Life Sciences
Research Promotion Center (LSRPC). Professor Tsai also has been a
consulting advisor for many government agencies, including the
Ministry of Examination, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the
Ministry of Education, and the Executive Yuan, gaining significant
international recognition.
In the category of Distinguished Research Professors, Professors
Sheng-Fuh Chang and Yuan-Kang Wu from the Department of
Electrical Engineering (EE) both received the NSTC Outstanding
Research Award for 2023 and were appointed as Distinguished
Research Professors by the university. Professor Chang specializes in
electromagnetics and its interdisciplinary applications in biomedical
detection and positioning technologies. In recent years, he has
developed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces to stabilize
electromagnetic environments, ensuring uninterrupted
communication. Professor Wu focuses on the research of power
system analysis, which is related to the integration of renewable
energy, including forecasting, dispatching, and control technologies.
His research includes numerous international collaborations, keeping
up with global energy development trends.
For the Outstanding Research Award, the recipients were Professors
Peter Shiu‐Hwa Tsu from the Department of Philosophy (PHI),
Professor Chien-Yen Chen from the Department of Earth and
Environmental Sciences (EES), and Professor Chia-Chan Chang
from EE. Professor Tsu, who previously won the NSTC Wu Ta-You
Award, contributed significantly with his “embeddedness thesis,”
which emphasizes that reasons for moral behavior must be concretely
embedded in specific situations, and provided by the specific
characteristics of the behavior in the situation. Professor Chen has
achieved substantial results in biomineralization research. He
established a spin-off company supported by the Ministry of
Economic Affairs, applying his research extensively to practical uses.
Professor Chang has been involved in the development of nextgeneration communication technologies, aiming to improve
communication quality by utilizing the existing characteristics of
electromagnetic waves with circuit structures, which has the impact
and potential to change the global wireless communication industry.
For young scholars, CCU selected five recipients. Associate
Professor Chiun-Chin Lin from the Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry (CHEM) is an expert in nuclear magnetic resonance
(NMR) technology, with extensive experience in both liquid and
solid-state NMR spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI). Assistant Professor Fujiwara Ken from the Department of
Psychology (PSY) researches nonverbal behavior and interpersonal
relationships from a social psychology perspective. He is the only
Asian associate editor of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior.
Associate Professor Ping-Huan Kuo from the Department of
Mechanical Engineering (ME) specializes in intelligent robots,
artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing, and is actively
involved in research on intelligent detection systems for machine
tools. Assistant Professor Ming-Hung Wang from the Department of
Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE) participates
in numerous industry-government-academia collaborative projects,
with his findings published in international journals and conferences,
enhancing the transparency of social networks. Associate Professor
Pu-Man Ouyang from the Department of Economics (ECON) focuses
on research about China’s international trade and the trends of the
Renminbi (CNY), making her one of the few scholars in Taiwan
dedicated to studying China’s economy.
