Graduate Institute of Education, National Chung Cheng University’s After-School Tutoring Program: “A Taste of Christmas” Creates a New Learning Experience for Children.

Under the impact of social changes and the impact of COVID-19, education and learning patterns are changing rapidly. In recent years, Graduate Institute of Education, National Chung Cheng University (CCU) has joined hands with the Righteousness Love Culture Cultivation Association for the “Project on Remedial Teaching of Math and Moral Education for Disadvantaged Students,” in which college students are recruited to serve as tutors for providing good care and learning environment for students. On the occasion of the Christmas season, the CCU team also took the students out of the classroom to cultivate their bodies and minds through the arts performance, and learn the virtue of not wasting food by having them make their own food, in the hope that children can not only focus on their studies, but also develop good moral character.

The "Project on Remedial Teaching of Math and Moral Education for Disadvantaged Students," which is implemented by Graduate Institute of Education of CCU, has promoted a learning style which features an “elaborate after-school tutoring” since the 110th academic year. The Graduate Institute of Education of CCU has also signed cooperation agreements with 9 primary schools in Taichung City, Minxiong Township and Dalin Township of Chiayi County, recruiting and training students from National Chung Cheng University, National Chiayi University, and National Taichung University of Education to serve as tutors, and teach at partner primary schools on a weekly basis. This program is different from the traditional teaching model of 6 to 8 students per class. It adopts 1-on-1 individual guidance and small class teaching system. Each teacher guides 1 to 5 students, so that resources can be more concentrated on children in need.

The promotion of the elaborate after-school tutoring has been promoted for more than a year, and the learning performance of students can be inferred from the pre-test and post-test results of the "Taiwan Assessment of Student Achievement (TASA)" for fifth and sixth graders. Graduate Institute of Education of CCU stated that the overall value of percentile rank of the pre-test was 43, and after a year of after-school tutoring, the overall value of the post-test rose to 61, growing by 18 percentage points, which shows that the program of after-school tutoring can effectively improve students' motivation for learning, and let them follow their own learning paces, and continue to try and work hard. Seeing the remarkable results of this after-school tutoring program, Yiren Elementary School of Jhuci Township of Chiayi County and Lieulin Elementary School of Shuishang Township of Chiayi County also joined the program. In the 111th school year, the number of schools joining in this program increased from 9 to 11, and the number of students also increased to 106.

It’s Christmas now, and the team of Graduate Institute of Education of CCU held a multi-learning activity called "A Taste of Christmas." A total of 83 students were led by National Chung Cheng and Chiayi University students to take part in the themed courses organized by the Righteousness Love Culture Cultivation Association, such as "Agri-food Education", "Handmade Creation", and "Local Cultural", so that children can escape the learning environment of ordinary classrooms. During the event, the schoolchildren acted as Santa Claus's good helper "little eggs" to complete different tasks. The students first turned into little chefs, and gradually made Christmas meals from dough kneading, ingredients matching, fermentation observation to kiln baking. The CCU team said that the significance of this activity is to allow school children to appreciate the connotations of food and agricultural education such as hard-won food, cherishing food, and reducing waste during the process of making food by themselves.

In another themed course, students have also turned into small craftsmen, using unlimited creativity to collage unique works in limited materials. In addition, the CCU team led the children to not only deeply understand the beauty of the architectural art of the National Taichung Theater, but also led them to feel the tension of art through theater performances that combine music, video animation, stage technology.

Today, the Righteousness Love Culture Cultivation Association also enjoyed Christmas with the children, and even presented tailor-made healthy sports shoes as Christmas gifts for all of them, hoping that the children will have a better protection in the process of living and learning, so that they can take every step towards the future steadily. Hua-An Chia, chairperson of the Righteousness Love Culture Cultivation Association, said that art and culture embody righteousness and love, and we can feel the touch from everyday life; at the same time, we can better understand this land, thank the predecessors for their hard work and dedication, and create the future.

Sheng-Yao Cheng, director of the Graduate Institute of Education of CCU, pointed out that exposing children to arts performance through different learning experiences will generate interests and needs for active exploration, which will naturally enhance learning motivation. Professor Cheng also expressed his gratitude to the Righteousness Love Culture Cultivation Association for their supports which enable the CCU team to continue to create a "new" learning experience for children and provide diverse and rich learning courses, hoping to benefit more children in the future.
