ETRA 2026 Explored Future-Ready English Language Teaching for Global Challenges
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at National Chung Cheng University and the English Teaching and Research Association (ETRA) jointly hosted the 43rd International Conference on English Teaching and Learning on October 16–17, 2026, at National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan. Under the theme “Future-Ready ELT for Global Challenges,” the conference brought together scholars, educators, and researchers to explore how English language teaching can respond to the urgent challenges of technological change and global interconnection.
In a rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected world, English language teaching is no longer concerned solely with linguistic proficiency. It must also foster intercultural understanding, global citizenship, and multiple literacies, including digital, media, and multilingual competencies. ETRA 2026 explored how technological and pedagogical innovation can reshape English teaching and learning while remaining grounded in meaningful, learner-centered engagement.
The conference also considered how emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, may be integrated responsibly into ELT; how educators can cultivate critical thinking, creative problem-solving, intercultural communication, and digital literacy; and how English can serve as a platform for engaging with global issues, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
ETRA 2026 featured four distinguished keynote speakers: Jessie Barrot, Vice President for Research and Development at National University, Philippines; Vahid Aryadoust, Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Ee Ling Low, President's Chair Professor in Education & Dean, Academic and Faculty Affairs, National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore; and Eric Yen-Liang Lin, Professor in the Department of English at National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan.
ETRA 2026 welcomed educators, researchers, and students interested in English language teaching, linguistics, digital learning, AI, EMI, ESP, and intercultural education. Participants were invited to share innovative practices, research findings, and new perspectives that will help advance future-ready ELT in a changing world.
