As autumn approached, the National Chung Cheng University (CCU) Library continued to enrich campus life through the arts with its 2026 Autumn & Winter Events. Featuring exhibitions, concerts, Taiwanese opera performances, artist conversations, and creative workshops, the program invited students, faculty, alumni, and arts enthusiasts in Chiayi to experience a cultural landscape where light, land, and memory converged.

One of the most anticipated events of the second half of the year was the outdoor Taiwanese opera performance "Bodhi in the Mortal World" on November 6, held on the eve of CCU’s 37th anniversary. Presented by Ming Hwa Yuan The RI Theatrical Troupe, the performance was led by Chen Sheng-Zai, renowned as one of Taiwan’s foremost comic performers in Taiwanese opera. Combining expressive operatic movements, humor, and a compelling storyline, the performance showcased the enduring artistic appeal of Taiwanese opera and its transmission across generations. A two-day anniversary market was also held on November 6 and 7, featuring a variety of food vendors and local specialty stalls, creating a festive campus atmosphere where cultural heritage met everyday life.

On December 8, OneSong Orchestra presented the concert From Alishan to the Hills: Songs Through Time. Centered on the theme of "Taiwanese popular music and collective memory," the program brought together folk songs, campus favorites, and popular classics from different generations, ranging from "Song of Alishan" and "Olive Tree" to "Hills," "Blue and White Porcelain," and "Party Animal." In addition to the musical performances, professional commentary on selected pieces offered insights into their historical contexts, stories, and cultural significance, inviting audiences on a cultural journey through different eras of Taiwan.

Beyond the major performances, the season featured a diverse lineup of exhibitions. Where Light Resides — Gathering the Blues of Time was open from August 29 to October 11. Centered on the traditional cyanotype process, the exhibition used light and shadow to capture fragments of life, transforming cyanotype into a medium that connected nature, well-being, and memory. Between exposure and development, fleeting moments were preserved in shades of blue.

Following this, Li Yi-Xing: White Noise 2026 Solo Exhibition was on view from October 16 through December 31. The artist transformed the number of strokes in written characters into repetitive physical labor. Through mechanical accumulation, painting gradually shed narrative and subjective intention, leaving behind traces of pure action and materiality. Meanwhile, beginning October 13, the western window area on the eighth floor featured Set yourself. Be yourself: Tsai Ping-Hsun Teacher and Student Ceramics Exhibition, presenting the creative journeys shared by the artist and his students and conveying a sense of freedom, everyday life, and the humanistic spirit of living alongside art.

The Library also hosted a series of artist talks and creative experiences. On September 22, Liu Ting-Se Art Talk II: Hometown Memories in Watercolor Featuring Cheng Ping-Huang brought together artists Liu Ting-Se and Cheng Ping-Huang to share how artistic practice takes root in the land and transforms lived experiences. Participants were also invited to create a watercolor postcard inspired by local memories. In conjunction with the White Noise exhibition, artist Li Yi-Xing hosted two artist conversations during the exhibition period: "Awareness in Artistic Practice" and "Reflection in Viewing Mechanisms." From the perspectives of both creator and viewer, Li and several contemporary artists explored the exhibition’s curatorial thinking, the suspension of narrative, and self-projection.

For those who enjoyed hands-on creativity, this season also offered workshops combining artistic expression with a sense of well-being. In conjunction with Where Light Resides, the Library hosted "When Sunlight Meets Flora - Exhibition Tour, Lecture & Hands-on Workshop" on September 21, followed by the "Blossoms in Your Palm – Handcrafted Cyanotype and Pocket Mirror Workshop" on October 1. Participants worked with plants, sunlight, paper, and fabric to capture the interplay of light and shadow, creating beautiful and practical objects through handmade craftsmanship.

The Artist-in-Residence program once again offered its popular Sketching Workshop on October 23, where participants captured campus scenery through outdoor sketching and live demonstrations. Closing out the year was the "Lacquered Wooden Cup Workshop." Using wood salvaged from trees that fell during Typhoon Danas in 2025, the workshop was led by lacquer artist Hung Chiao-Ping of the 18 Lacquer Studio. Participants learned the traditional fuki-urushi wiping technique and applied it to a prepared wooden cup, creating a practical and meaningful keepsake. The workshop gave fallen trees new life while promoting sustainability and cultural heritage.

The Library also launched an open-air cinema event for the first time this autumn. The plaza in front of the Library was transformed into an open-air cinema featuring a relaxed evening atmosphere and a mini food market. New students and the campus community were invited to enjoy films beneath the stars and in the gentle evening breeze.

The National Chung Cheng University Library continues to develop its campus arts and cultural programs with the goal of making art an integral part of everyday campus life. This autumn and winter, the program spanned visual art, music, Taiwanese opera, and traditional craft experiences, bringing together artistic appreciation, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability while creating opportunities for students and faculty to encounter the arts beyond the classroom.
