publish date : 2024-11-20

The results of the first National Interdisciplinary Professional English Presentation Competition, organized by the Taiwan ESP Association and Chaoyang University of Technology, were announced on November 8, 2024. Team CCU, namely Kuo-wei Tseng from Department of Electrical Engineering, Hsien-hui Huang, and Li-chi Chang from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, won the first place! The cross-disciplinary collaboration between EMI and artificial intelligence (AI) education at CCU has accomplished the first milestone.

Dr. Wen-chun Chen, the Director of the institution-level EMI Resource Promotion Center, noted that since the establishment of the University’s EMI Resource Center in June 2022, there has been remarkable progress in enhancing students' language skills. The students’ remarkable success is the best evidence of this success.

Under the guidance of the National Science Council, the purpose of the competition was to enhance students' understanding and application of both (AI) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and to promote collaboration among students from different disciplines and academic backgrounds. The competition also served as a platform for showcasing innovative thinking and practical applications, aiming to increase faculty and students' awareness of technological literacy and improve students’ ability to express themselves in English. Participants were required to record a short video related to AI applied in professional English uses without any post-editing. The team from our university was co-coached by Dr. Wen-chun Chen from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature and Dr. Alan Liu from the Department. of Communications Engineering, with their project titled "How Personalized Learning Helps Students Who Are Falling Behind—Recommendation System." The presentation explored how AI can assist students with low academic performance by offering personalized learning strategies to improve their learning outcomes. The content not only demonstrated the students’ understanding of professional topics but also incorporated practical, feasible, and assessable AI-assisted tools. It is significantly the balance of innovation and practicality, along with the students' excellent English presentation skills that crowned them the championship.

Since the launch of Taiwan’s bilingual policy, National Chung Cheng University has leveraged its diverse academic strengths, selecting the College of Engineering, the College of Management, and the College of Education as pilot areas for bilingual education. With these three colleges recognized by the Ministry of Education as "Field-specific Benchmark Institutions," our students have also achieved outstanding results in nationwide English language competitions. This highlights the double successes of both academic training and bilingual education at our university.
