Over 300 Students from National Cheng Chung University Participated in the 10th Annual Investment Competition, Cultivating Knowledge in Financial Management

publish date : 2024-01-03

Nowadays, amid the growing trend of personal finance, National Chung Cheng
University   (CCU)   actively   encourages   its   students   to   enhance   their   money
management skills. To improve financial literacy and understanding of different
trading   methods,   the   school   organized   the   10th   Annual   Investment
Competition,   offering   students   hands-on   experiences   on   a   simulated   stock
investment platform. Following two months of intense competition, the list of
winners was   announced, with Yu-Hsiang Wang,   Jie-You   Jiang,   and Chun-Jen
Chang—master's students from the CCU Department of Finance—securing the
top spot as the winning team. The team achieved an impressive 68.63% rate of
return   from their   investment portfolio, and   the award was presented by Dr.
Zhang-Hua Fong, President of CCU himself.
CCU’s 10th Annual Investment Competition was sponsored by the Ministry of
Education’s (MOE) Higher Education Sprout Project and Startup Land at CCU.
Students   from all departments at CCU were eligible   for participation   in the
competition. This year, a total of 309 students, forming 103 teams, took part in
the event. Additionally,   in order to overcome collaboration challenges among
students   from   different   departments   and   to   foster   student   engagement,   an
acceleration platform has been   set up on   social media   to assist   students   in
finding their ideal teammates.
A virtual platform provided by APEX International Financial Engineering Res.
& Tech. Co., Ltd. was used in the competition to stimulate trading in the stock
market. Each team was given 10 million virtual cash in NT dollars to begin the
competition.   Contestants   were   eligible   to   trade   listed   and   over-the-counter
(OTC) stocks, options, Taiwan Index Futures (e.g. TAIEX Futures, Mini-TAIEX
Futures, Electronics Sector Index Futures, Finance Sector Index Futures, FTSE
TWSE   Taiwan   50   Index),   index   options   and   more.   The   organizers   of   the
competition stated that the rules and regulations of the investment competition
were designed to stimulate the real stock market, therefore, participants could
experience the risks and returns of their investment portfolio without needing
to enter the actual market.
"The Trio" team    ( 三 人 行 ), consisting of Yu-Hsiang Wang, Jie-You Jiang, and
Chun-Jen Chang, all master's students from the CCU Department of Finance,
secured the top spot   in this year's   investment competition. The team shared
that, when anticipating significant market impact from important data releases,
engaging   in option   trading   is a wise   strategy. Due   to   the   characteristics of
options,   which   provide   great   potential   for   profit   during   financial   market
volatility,   satisfactory   returns   are   usually   achievable   as   long   as   one   can
effectively manage the decay of time value. Simultaneously, the winning team
also highlighted that   in addition to   immersing themselves   in the real market
atmosphere through this competition, they also gained familiarity with various
investment   tools   through   trial   and   error.   They   stated   that   the   key   to   their
success   lies   not   only   in   maintaining   financial   market   awareness   but   more
crucially,   in   avoiding   risky   bets   against   the   market   and   making   timely
adjustments to portfolio strategies in response to market changes.
Dr. Ming-Chang Cheng, Deputy Director of Startup Land at CCU, expressed
that   previous   annual   investment   competitions   held   at   CCU   have   received
enthusiastic   responses   from   students,   and   this   year’s   competition   was   no
different. Dr. Cheng holds high expectations   that   the competition can assist
participating   students   in   establishing   proper   investing   concepts. While   the
primary objective of the competition was not to identify the one that excels at
investing, it is aimed to ignite motivation in students, inspiring them to actively
seek and share financial knowledge.
