“I’ve survived so many unfair destinies so far, as well as being accused and judged by a foreign language,” is a classical quote from the novel Port of Lies, reflecting the dilemma a socially vulnerable group suffers. This novel was later adapted into a TV series and has made a hit on Netflix; it is a high-profile TV series that ranked first in the Netflix viewing rankings in Taiwan in August 2023. Fu-jui Tang(唐福睿), an alumnus of the National Chung Cheng University(CCU) Department of Law, wrote the novel Port of Lies and made it the winner of both the first prize in the “2021 MirrorFiction Million Dollar Award” and the “46th Golden Tripod Award for book publication of literature Category.” Moreover, except for serving as the writer of the novel, Tang is also the screenwriter and director for this famous television adaptation. Fu-jui Tang graduated from the CCU Department of Law with a bachelor's degree and was a lawyer for five years before he moved overseas to study for his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). "I want to experience a new field, so I tried new skills as much as I could considering I’m still young," Tang said, he is always thinking of engaging in art creation and photography, and he used to work in a library that provides training courses like photography, videography, or poster designing during his college days, which allows him to learn more about creating. “Law is like the main axis of my thought, and it’s quite hard to escape from the legal point of view when thinking about anything, not to mention creating the script is more about rational thinking." FuJui Tang mentioned that most people think script writing may be more about inspiration, however, it depends more on organizing skills and summarizing skills. With nearly half his life immersed in legal issues, Tang is really familiar with organizing materials, and is used to applying all the key elements he found into his script efficiently, then consider what will resonate with viewers when he is writing the script. Looking back on his time at CCU, Tang revealed that he often felt insecure about the future as a student, though almost every law student knows they need to get an attorney’s license first after graduating. "When I graduated, I was worried about whether I could get the license; and when I finally passed the Bar exam, I was still worried about if I could get a job that was decent enough." However, Tang concluded that there is no use in worrying but concentrating on doing something when facing anxiety, since you will definitely gain the rewards if you stick to it. In the end, Tang also encouraged CCU students that it’s hard to know the challenges ahead in our lives, so we should just make every effort to what we are facing. Port of Lies is a work involving sensitive issues such as indigenous peoples, foreign migrant workers, the death penalty, and the government-enterprise collusion, and is based on the case of Tang Ying-shen (湯英伸) from1986, who was sentenced to death for murder. The story depicts a murder by the sea in 2020, the victims are three members of a boat captain’s family from the Amis tribe, one of the indigenous tribes of Taiwan, living in Bachimen, Keelung; and the murderer was accused as an Indonesian migrant fisherman who was thus sentenced to death in the court of first instance. In the story, there are also three main characters, the appointed indigenous public defender from Amis, a young man under Substitute Military Service who is about to become a judge, an Indonesian nurse who serves as a translator. The three strangers teamed up, transcending racial barriers and language barriers, defending the murderer jointly. By directly confronting the issue of the abolition of the death penalty, Port of Lies is an attempt to make viewers reflect more on the meaning behind it. _______________________________
