Reflecting on the origin of the first God with a doctorate degree, National Chung Cheng University shares the history of the school
National Chung Cheng University, the grand and extensive school, has been established for 33 years. Around 120 hectares of the school’s vast area was donated by Gu Feng Temple. To thank the temple for their generosity, CCU awarded Shen Nong Dadi the “Honorary Doctorate” degree. Therefore, making Shen Nong Dadi the first ever God to receive a doctorate degree in Taiwan. On the 16th, CCU secretary general, Yu-Hsun Yang, was interviewed by Top TV’s program “Taiwan Temples”. During the interview, he explained CCU and Gu Feng Temple’s shared history and connection.
CCU’s authority said, Top TV is famous for introducing Taiwan’s religious culture, which led them to Minxiong Township, and focused on Fongshou village’s Gu Feng Temple. Upon being touched by Gu Feng Temple's generous donation, and CCU's award to Shen Nong Dadi, Top TV decided to do a special interview with secretary general Yu-Hsun Yang.
Reflecting on the history of the school, Yu-Hsun Yang said, the government decided to establish CCU in 1986. One of the requirements of founding the school was for the county to provide 120 hectares of land. Therefore, after persuasion from the then Chiayi County Mayors – De-Ci, Tu and Jia-Rong, He – Gu Feng Temple donated 60 hectares of land without compensation, while the county’s government made up for the rest. “The charitable act of Gu Feng Temple is a great example for the religious sphere. Donations to schools or non-profit organizations are all welcomed. We genuinely appreciate Gu Feng Temple’s selfless benefaction.” said Yu-Hsun Yang. Apart from awarding the honorary doctorate degree, Shen Nong Dadi has also been invited to CCU’s anniversary celebration once every 5 or 10 years, in an effort to show CCU’s respect and gratitude for the temple.
“A university shouldn’t be seen as an ivory tower; a university should be able to engage with its nearby communities. To show our hospitality, we welcomed Gu Feng Temple’s faculties to our school’s anniversary celebration, and invited chiefs of Sanxing village, Fongshou village, and Gu Feng Temple to be our school’s committee members. Through gifting vehicle passes to neighboring communities, we express friendliness to the public.” said Yu-Hsun Yang. Another credible example of CCU’s public-spirited attitude is when CCU and Gu Feng Temple took in several mango trees respectively, due to the county’s forward-looking plan of expanding University Road. Through joining hands with the locals, CCU helped improve the county’s condition and worked toward a better future.
