Title:CutRight: Fast and Accurate Machining Simulation Software for NC Tool Path Verification and Correction

This talk outlines the main features and applications of a novel machining simulation software tool, named as CutRight, developed by our research group. CutRight is regarded as the fastest machining simulation software to date for NC tool paths. It is able to accurately simulate milling operations with up to five-axis tool motions. In addition, it features an interactive simulation space for the workpiece model with full NC commands correspondence to expedite the root cause analysis and correction of identified machining errors. With the constant push in industry for the highest possible production efficiency, faster machining simulation is essential to CAM engineers in creating proper NC tool paths as well as to CNC machinists in operating machine tools with next-generation smart controllers. Especially for the smart machine tools, every second spent on simulating, verifying and correcting the machining operation is a second lost in productivity. CutRight utilizes a technically advanced workpiece geometry modeling method based on frame-sliced voxels to achieve fast and accurate simulation of machined part geometry. Up to 3.3 times faster simulation speeds have been observed in comparison with the state-of-the-art tri-dexel machining simulation technology. To quickly perform NC tool path verification and correction, CutRight offers a suite of utility functions to analyze the machined geometry: (1) direct comparison with an input CAD model; (2) full correspondence between the machined part geometry and associated NC commands; and (3) user-friendly interactive simulation work space. Typically, a few mouse clicks are sufficient to verify or to identify exact faults in the NC tool paths. With CutRight’s fast simulation speed and advanced analysis functions, NC tool path verification and correction are done very quickly and with ease. Costly machine crashes and repeated physical machining test runs can effectively be avoided by using CutRight.
